Curiouser and Curiouser
This is Frankie. Frankie is a green woodpecker who visits our garden regularly, to feast on the ready supply of ants. Today I thought Frankie had brought another woodpecker along; I was wrong. The friend – and I do mean that, as they wandered side by side and behaved in the same manner – was actually a jay. I’ve often seen jays around here, but never in the garden. And never on the ground.
This one did keep flying off to hide in a nearby tree, before returning to the ground to behave like a woodpecker. As I say, curiouser and curiouser.
*Apologies for the poor picture quality, but it was a fair way off and I was in a hurry!

I always have Jays in my garden and they are usually on the ground looking for something tasty, they usually chase off any other birds while they’re there too
Oh, that’s interesting Jules, thanks – they are so beautiful. It was so funny to watch – it felt like he wanted to be the woodpecker. It goes with the pheasant we have who scavenges under the bird feeder!
